To receive a medical cannabis card in Oklahoma, you first need a signed recommendation from an Oklahoma physician registered with OMMA. The state has different types of licenses

Adult
- For Oklahoma residents who are 18 and older. This license is valid for up to 2 years.
Out-of-State
- This license is given to non-Oklahoma residents with a state-issued medical marijuana license. It is valid for up to 30 days.
Short-Term
- A license for Oklahoma residents that is valid for up to 60 days.
Minor
- For Minor residents aged 0-17. This card is valid for up to 2 years.

Depending on the type of license you need, the age and residency requirements can vary. There is medical cannabis certification for both adult and minor patients, long and short-term licenses, and cards for both residents and state visitors.

I have a qualifying condition. Does it make me automatically qualified for Oklahoma’s Medical Cannabis Program?

Oklahoma does not specify any qualifying conditions for legal medical marijuana use. You will need a recommendation from an OMMA-registered physician to apply as a patient.

Can I grow my own medical marijuana if I have obtained my ID card?

Yes. Licensed patients may grow six mature and six seedling plants on property they own, or with the owner’s written permission, and the plants may not be visible from any adjacent street.

Does insurance cover medical cannabis?

Not by law. Under Oklahoma’s cannabis statute, 63 O.S. § 427.8, nothing obliges health insurers to pay for medical marijuana, and government medical programs need not pay unless federal law requires it.

No. Only patients licensed by OMMA may possess and use medical cannabis in Oklahoma.

Is it okay to use medical cannabis while waiting for my Oklahoma Marijuana Card?

I lost my Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Card. What should I do?

If you lost your card you need to log on to your account in the OMMA licensing portal and fill out a replacement card request. You’ll need to give the reason for the replacement request.

If I obtained my Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Card, who would know about it?

Oklahoma law requires OMMA to seal patient records (63 O.S. § 420(J)), and OMMA Verify shows only a license’s status, expiry date and county.

What types of medical cannabis products are approved for use in Oklahoma?

At one time, licensed patients can legally possess:

Up to 3 oz. (84.9 g) of marijuana on their person
6 mature marijuana plants and the harvested marijuana
6 seedling plants
1 oz. (28.3 g) of concentrated marijuana
8 oz. (226.4 g) of marijuana in your residence
72 oz. (2,037.6 g) of edible marijuana
72 oz. of topical marijuana

Caregivers

Does the Oklahoma Medical Cannabis Program allow caregivers?

Yes. Caregiver licenses are available to family members or assistants who consistently care for the medical marijuana patient for whom they are applying. This license is free and it enables the caregiver to purchase, transport, possess, and administer medical marijuana or marijuana products to licensed patients. Here’s what you need to know.

A designated caregiver needs to be at least 18 years old.
Each licensed caregiver may serve as the primary caregiver for up to five licensed patients
Only one licensed caregiver may be assigned to a licensed adult patient
Up to two licensed caregivers may be designated for a licensed minor patient.
A caregiver’s designated patient needs to have a completed physician recommendation form where the qualified physician certifies the necessity of a caregiver.
Both the caregiver and the patient must sign the completed Caregiver Designation Form.
Caregiver licenses are valid until the expiration date for their patient(s) but not exceeding two years.
Caregivers need to provide proof of identity, proof of residency, and an acceptable photo when they apply.

Is Medical Marijuana Legal in Oklahoma?

Yes. Medical cannabis is legal in the state of Oklahoma.

Can I be fired for using medical marijuana?

No. Unless federal law or federal funding requires otherwise, an employer may not fire or refuse to hire you only for holding a patient license or for a positive test, and it never has to allow use at work.
Use or impairment at work and safety-sensitive jobs are not protected, and from November 1, 2026 HB 3127 applies a zero-tolerance standard to those jobs.
