Mississippi requires your first certification to come from a Mississippi-registered practitioner who examines you in person in Mississippi, unless you are homebound. How Do Cannabis Doctors in Jackson Certify Patients?
In Mississippi a practitioner certifies a qualifying condition; the certification is not a prescription, and the practitioner may cap the amount or the product forms. A certification stays current for up to 12 months, unless the practitioner sets a shorter period. The card, not the certification, is what protects you: state law presumes medical use when you carry it with no more than the allowable amount. A follow-up visit is required no sooner than six months after certification, and it may be with a different registered practitioner.

Mississippi Medical Cannabis Program
The program grew out of Initiative 65, which voters approved in 2020 and the Supreme Court voided in May 2021. Today it rests on Senate Bill 2095, the Mississippi Medical Cannabis Act, which the Governor signed on February 2, 2022. Since then the Legislature has amended the Act in 2023, 2024 and 2025, changing the application window, the purchase limits and the telehealth rule. You apply online once a practitioner registered with MSDH has given you a written certification. Section 5 of SB 2095 then gives each Jackson cardholder a legal presumption of medical use, as long as the amount held stays within the allowable limit.
