Can I grow my own medical marijuana if I have obtained my ID card?

No. Growing your own marijuana is illegal in Iowa, even if you have a medical marijuana card. The state only allows the use of specific cannabidiol products from a verified Iowa manufacturer.

Does insurance cover medical cannabidiol?

No. At this time, medical cannabidiol products are not eligible for reimbursement through insurance.

How to Obtain A Medical Marijuana Card in Iowa?

Anyone with a qualifying medical condition who has received a recommendation from a licensed Iowa physician can qualify for a medical CBD card. First, the patient must be at least 18 years old and a state resident. For minors with qualifying conditions, a caregiver must be registered with the patient. Next, schedule a consultation with a licensed medical professional and let them know you'd like to be assessed for a medical marijuana card. Be sure to bring any relevant medical records with you to the appointment. During the evaluation, your doctor will determine whether or not you have a qualifying condition. If you are approved, you will be given a written recommendation. Finally, go to the Online Patient Registration Form and follow the steps from the Online Application and Renewal Guide to complete an online application.

Your medical cannabidiol registration card expires one year after it's issued. To renew your card, you'll need: 1. Visit your healthcare practitioner and have your condition recertified, 2. Submit the same forms to the Department of Public Health, similar to the registration process, 3. Pay the renewal fee.

No. To participate in Iowa’s Medical Cannabidiol Program, you’ll need to be registered with the Department of Public Health, and to be able to purchase from Iowa’s dispensaries you need a state-issued medical cannabidiol card.

The state fee for Iowa medical marijuana card is $100 unless you’re eligible for a reduced fee. A reduced fee of $25 is possible if any of the following is provided:

Copy of proof of receipt of Supplemental Security Income Payment (SSI receipt)
Copy of Iowa Medicaid member card
Copy of Hawk-I member card

You will be required to present to the department your valid state-issued driver’s license, nonoperator’s identification card, or alternative form of valid photo identification.

The validity of a medical cannabidiol registration card is one year from the date of issuance.

A cardholder who wishes to renew their medical cannabidiol registration card must submit an application and fee to the department. A cardholder who fails to renew their medical cannabidiol registration card may not legally purchase, possess and use medical CBD in Iowa.

Changes in your current residence address, name, or sex designation listed on your card must be reported to the Department of Health within ten calendar days of the change. To change the current residence address, name, or sex designation listed on a medical cannabidiol registration card, you must give the card to the department and present a valid state-issued driver's license, nonoperator's identification card, or alternative form of valid photo identification that has been updated according to the procedures established by the state.

If I obtained my Iowa Medical Marijuana Card, who would know about it?

Whether you're a patient or a caregiver, your participation in the program and any personally identifiable information are confidential under Iowa law, with the exception of a few limited circumstances. You may appeal the denial or cancellation of a medical cannabidiol registration card by sending a request for appeal to the department within 20 days of receiving the notice of denial. It is possible. Any person may file a petition to add or remove a medical condition with Iowa's Medical Cannabidiol Advisory Board. Within six months of the petition's filing, or any longer period agreed to by the petitioner, the board must either deny the petition and notify the petitioner in writing of the board's action and the reasons for it, or grant the petition and notify the petitioner that the board has recommended addition or removal of the medical condition, medical treatment, or debilitating disease to the board of medicine.

Is Medical Marijuana Legal in Iowa?

Yes. Medical cannabidiol with less than 3%  THC content is legal in Iowa.

How is medical cannabis legal in the state?

Only CBD products with low-THC content are legal in Iowa. According to 2020 legislation (HF 2589), there is a limit of a combined total of 4.5 grams of THC to a patient in 90 days.

I have a medical marijuana card. What if I encounter law enforcement?

As a patient or a primary caregiver, you should carry your medical cannabidiol card on you at all times when in possession of medical cannabidiol products. Products purchased at Iowa’s licensed dispensaries will have a label affixed to them with your patient number, which is also on your registration card.

Keep in mind that cannabis products with 0.3% THC content are federally illegal.

Should my employer know that I am a participant to the Iowa Medical Marijuana Card Program?

You must make sure that your employer's policies allow the use of cannabidiol at work and/or outside of work. Take note that using CBD products even with low-THC content can result in a positive THC presence test.

Can I keep my CBD products if I'm in assisted living or long-term care?

Accepted Answer

Assisted living and long-term care facilities receive federal funding and grants and cannabis is illegal according to federal law. As a result, storing or administering medical cannabidiol products within these facilities may be an issue. Please make sure to consult the facility staff before carrying your medical CBD products there.

No. Only Iowa residents with valid state-issued medical cannabidiol cards are allowed to purchase from local dispensaries.

How much medical marijuana can I purchase at once?

There is a limit of a combined total of 4.5 grams of THC to a patient in 90 days.
There are two exceptions to the ‘4.5g per 90-day purchase limit.

For any patient certified for a terminal illness, a healthcare practitioner may recommend more THC per 90 days at the time of certification.
If the patient’s original healthcare practitioner certifies them for additional THC after the patient has participated in the program.

Your doctor has to fill out the 4.5g THC Waiver Form for this purpose. This form cannot be completed by a practitioner other than those who originally certified you.

Does Iowa accept out-of-state cards?

A valid medical cannabidiol registration card issued by another state with a similar cannabidiol program allows an out-of-state patient to possess or use medical cannabidiol in Iowa, as long as the products meet the strict requirements of Iowa's medical cannabidiol program. Patients from other states are unable to purchase products at Iowa dispensaries.
