To get a Missouri medical marijuana card, you need a certification from a Missouri-licensed physician or nurse practitioner, then an online application to the DHSS Division of Cannabis Regulation within 30 days of that certification. DHSS has run the medical program since voters approved it in 2018, and its Division of Cannabis Regulation handles patient cards today.

Article XIV of Missouri’s constitution has set the medical program’s rules since December 6, 2018, and Amendment 3 amended it in 2022.

How to get a medical marijuana card in Missouri? This guide walks you through each step, but first, note that Missouri runs both a medical program and an adult-use market for people 21 and older.

To apply for a Missouri medical marijuana card, you’ll first need an exam by a Missouri-licensed physician or nurse practitioner. To be eligible for medical marijuana card registration, you need at least one qualifying medical condition, a government-issued photo ID and a practitioner certification issued within 30 days before you apply. Minor patients under the age of 18 are required to complete and submit a Parent/Legal Guardian Consent Form Document with their application.

I have a qualifying condition. Does it make me automatically qualified for Missouri’s Medical Cannabis Program?

Can I grow my own medical marijuana if I have obtained my ID card?

The state of Missouri allows medical cannabis patients to grow their own marijuana at home, however, you will need to include this in your application, otherwise, you won’t be allowed to cultivate your own cannabis.

To receive a patient cultivation ID card ($57.83), you need to answer “yes” to the following question in your online application “Do you intend to cultivate medical marijuana?” and provide details about your cultivation location, security, and access.

Licensed patients or licensed caregivers who are authorized to cultivate cannabis on their behalf, may cultivate up to 6 flowering marijuana plants, 6 nonflowering marijuana plants (over 14 inches tall), and 6 clones (plants under 14 inches tall) in a single, enclosed locked facility at any given time.

Does insurance cover medical cannabis?

Not by law. Missouri law does not require health insurers to cover medical marijuana.

What do I need to apply for a Missouri medical marijuana card?

To receive your medical marijuana card in Missouri the requirements are:

Missouri medical marijuana cards are valid for three years.

Yes, for adults 21 and older. A patient card brings the 4% medical tax rate and a 6 ounce limit every 30 days, and patients aged 18 to 20 need one to buy.

Both the first-time application and renewal fees for a patient medical marijuana card are $28.92. If you also want to grow at home, the patient cultivation card fee is $57.83 for the first application and each renewal.

Does a caregiver need a separate Missouri card?

Yes. A primary caregiver must be 21 or older and needs a caregiver ID card, which costs $28.92 from July 2026 to June 2027, the same as a patient card.

When should I renew my Missouri card?

Between 60 and 30 days before your card expires. DHSS takes a renewal no sooner than 60 days and at least 30 days before expiry, with a new certification less than 30 days old.

Can police check whether my Missouri card is valid?

Yes. Article XIV lets DHSS release patient information to confirm that a person who shows a patient ID card to state or local law enforcement lawfully holds that card.

DHSS charges the same fee for a first patient card and for a renewal, and a separate, higher fee for a patient cultivation card. Article XIV sets the patient card’s base fee, which DHSS adjusts for inflation each year, so check the DHSS fee schedule for the current amounts.

Yes. In Missouri primary caregivers are individuals in charge of a qualified patient’s well-being and must be

Designated by the qualified patient on the primary caregiver’s application for an identification card or in other written notification to the Department.

Primary caregivers are people who have been authorized by the qualified patient to buy and possess marijuana on their behalf. They might also be allowed to grow medical marijuana plants on behalf of a qualified patient.

Are there dispensaries in Missouri?

Where do I purchase medical marijuana once I have my MMJ card?

You can only purchase cannabis products from a DHSS-licensed Missouri marijuana dispensary. If you hold a patient cultivation ID card you can also grow your own marijuana plants at home if you follow the state guidelines.

Can anyone purchase medical cannabis in the state?

No. Medical sales need a Missouri patient card or an out-of-state card a dispensary accepts; adults 21 and older may buy adult-use.

How much medical marijuana can I purchase at once?

There is a monthly purchase limit in Missouri. Qualified patients may purchase up to 6 ounces of dried marijuana, or its equivalent, every 30 days.

What are MMEs?

MMEs are medical marijuana equivalency units. The DHSS FAQ states the limits in ounces of dried marijuana or its equivalent, and for those limits each of these counts the same:

1 ounce of dried, unprocessed marijuana
8 grams of marijuana concentrate
800 mg of THC in infused products

Can I use my Missouri medical marijuana card in another state?

Each state has its own cannabis patient reciprocity policy. Some states allow non-residents to buy medical marijuana from dispensaries, while others have functional recreational marijuana laws that allow you to buy cannabis from non-medical shops regardless of residency status.

A Missouri card protects you only under Missouri law, so check the other state’s rules before you travel. Missouri dispensaries may accept cards from other states, and adults 21 and older can buy there without one.
