Marijuana Card Guide
A Cedar Rapids marijuana card is Iowa’s medical cannabidiol registration card. Iowa’s Medical Cannabis Program lets Iowa-licensed physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and podiatrists certify a patient they treat who has a qualifying condition. Our Iowa medical marijuana card page explains how the written certification and the Iowa HHS registration card fit together. With a card, you can buy medical cannabidiol products at any of Iowa’s five licensed dispensaries.
The certifying practitioner must be licensed in Iowa, be your primary care provider for the condition, and have examined and treated you; a telehealth visit counts only if it meets the Iowa Board of Medicine’s telemedicine standards. After certification, Cedar Rapids patients apply online, and HHS replies by email within seven days.
A Cedar Rapids Medical Marijuana Card follows the same statewide steps and fee. The state card costs $100 a year, or $25 with proof of SSI, SSDI, Iowa Medicaid or your state’s equivalent, or veteran status. Adults 18 and older apply for their own card. HHS does not refund the fee, so have your practitioner finish the form before you apply.

HOW IOWA MEDICAL
CANNABIDIOL CERTIFICATION
WORKS IN CEDAR RAPIDS
Cedar Rapids patients register through Iowa HHS, which runs the program under Iowa’s Medical Cannabidiol Act (Iowa Code chapter 124E). The HHS dispensary list has none in Cedar Rapids; the closest licensed sites are in Iowa City and Waterloo, two of the five dispensaries operating in Iowa. The program dates to 2014, when Senate File 2360 created Iowa’s first Medical Cannabidiol Act, and House File 990, signed June 2, 2026, lets HHS license up to ten dispensaries, up from five. Program questions go to HHS at 1-877-214-9313.
Iowa caps purchases at 4.5 grams of total THC every 90 days, and the limit is combined for a patient and caregiver. The cap can rise in two cases: a practitioner can set a higher amount for a terminal illness at certification, or the practitioner who certified you can sign a waiver after you have been in the program. A waiver is not available at the first appointment.

Iowa Medical
Cannabidiol Program
How does Iowa’s Medical Cannabidiol Program work? Start with the limits. Smoking medical cannabidiol is prohibited, and raw flower is not allowed. The card lasts one year, and each renewal needs a new certification. A visitor with another state’s card may possess allowed forms in Iowa but cannot buy here. Iowa cardholders may also register as visiting patients in Minnesota.
