Here is how the process works.

To get a Mississippi medical marijuana card, see a practitioner registered with MSDH for an in-person exam, then apply in the MSDH portal within six months of certification and pay the $25 fee ($15 with Medicaid). MSDH decides a complete application within 10 days.

A practitioner decides whether cannabis may ease your symptoms; MSDH issues the card.

Mississippi’s rules come from the Mississippi Medical Cannabis Act, Senate Bill 2095, which the Governor signed on February 2, 2022.

Your age decides which practitioners can certify you and how many you need. The Mississippi Medical Cannabis Program (MMCP) issues resident cards to adults 18 and older, plus temporary cards to qualifying visitors. Patients under 18 need a physician (MD or DO) and a parent or guardian who consents and serves as caregiver. Patients aged 18 to 25 need certifications from two practitioners, one of them an MD or DO, at separate practices unless the patient is homebound or had a card before 18.

Once a registered practitioner certifies that you have a qualifying condition, the certification goes straight to MSDH. A state-issued card is what lets you buy medical cannabis at a licensed Mississippi dispensary. The state card costs $25 a year, or $15 for Medicaid participants.

The practitioner must hold an unrestricted Mississippi license, complete 8 hours of approved training before enrolling, and then register with MSDH and complete 5 hours of training every year. To be able to legally purchase medical marijuana in the state, you’ll need to enroll in the Mississippi Medical Cannabis Program (MMCP). For this, you’ll need a certification from a practitioner registered with MSDH. After a registered practitioner determines that you have a qualifying medical condition, you will receive a certification for medical cannabis use. Following this, you will need to apply to the Medical Cannabis Program as a patient within six months of medical certification.

Residency & Age Requirements

Residents 18 or older who have a qualifying medical condition may apply for a medical marijuana card in Mississippi. Qualifying patients under 18 can receive a registry identification card only with the signed consent of a parent or a legal guardian.

Visitors with an active card from their home state can apply for a temporary Mississippi card, valid for 15 days and renewable once a year.

I have a qualifying condition. Does it make me automatically qualified for Mississippi’s Medical Cannabis Program?

No, just because you have a qualifying condition listed by the Mississippi Medical Cannabis Card Program, doesn’t mean you can automatically use medical marijuana in the state. You still need a written certification from a registered practitioner and an MSDH card to use medical cannabis.

Where do I find a Mississippi Medical Marijuana Doctor?

Can I grow my own medical marijuana if I have obtained my ID card?

No. Only licensed cannabis cultivation facilities can grow marijuana in Mississippi.

Does insurance cover medical cannabis?

No. Medicaid and private insurance do not pay for medical cannabis in Mississippi, and state law does not require them to.

How to Obtain A Medical Marijuana Card in Mississippi?

Anyone with a qualifying medical condition who has a written certification from a practitioner registered with MSDH can apply for a card.

If you are a state resident who is 18 or older, you will need to be certified by a registered practitioner. This certification will validate that you have a qualifying condition for medical cannabis use.
For minors with qualifying conditions, a parent’s or legal guardian’s signed consent is required.
Nonresident patients with an active card from their home state can apply to MSDH for a temporary card.

Schedule an appointment with a practitioner registered with MSDH to be evaluated for a medical marijuana card. Please bring any relevant medical records to the appointment. Your doctor will determine whether or not you have a qualifying condition during the evaluation. If you qualify, the practitioner submits an electronic certification to MSDH for you. Finally, go to the MSDH portal and apply online within six months of receiving your certification. Your application asks for:

A written certification issued by a practitioner within six months immediately preceding the date of the application
The application or renewal fee
Your name, address, social security number, and date of birth
The name, address, and telephone number of your practitioner issuing the written certification
The name, address, social security number, and date of birth of the designated caregiver, or designated caregivers, chosen by you

Book your exam with a practitioner registered with MSDH and bring your medical records. A follow-up visit is required no sooner than six months after certification.

What is the card’s validity period?

The validity period of your medical cannabis card is one year unless your doctor specified an earlier date for the expiration of the registry identification card.

Nonresident registry identification cards have a 15-day expiration date from the date of issuance.

Is it optional to have a cannabis ID card?

No. Only patients certified by a registered practitioner and issued an MSDH card may possess and use medical cannabis in Mississippi.

What is the fee for this identification card?

Is it okay to use medical cannabis while waiting for my Mississippi Marijuana Card?

No. You need both a practitioner’s certification and an MSDH card before you may possess or use medical cannabis in Mississippi.

I lost my Mississippi Medical Marijuana Card. What should I do?

If you lose your medical marijuana patient ID card, you need to inform MSDH within 10 days of becoming aware that the card has been lost.

What’s the process of renewal?

In Mississippi, you renew no later than one year after your card was issued and pay the $25 fee. The recertification exam may be done by telehealth if that practitioner has already examined you in person.

If I obtained my Mississippi Medical Marijuana Card, who would know about it?

Mississippi law keeps registry records confidential and exempt from public records requests, and MSDH does not publish patient names.

What life changes should I report to MSDH?

As a registered patient, you need to notify MSDH of any change in your name, address, caregiver or qualifying condition within 20 days of the change.

What are the possible reasons for a denied ID card application?

Your application can be denied for any of the following reasons:

You did not provide the required information or materials
You previously had a registry identification card revoked
You provided false information
You failed to meet the other requirements of MSDH

In case of application or renewal denial you will receive a written notice of the reason for denying.

What should I do if my application is denied?

Denial of an application or renewal is a final MSDH action, but you can petition the circuit court in your home county for review. The petition must be filed within 20 days after the denial.

Can a minor apply for the Mississippi Medical Cannabis Program?

Yes. Qualifying patients under 18 can apply for a Mississippi medical marijuana card with the written consent of a parent or a legal guardian.

How long does the card application take? Is it possible to expedite the application?

The Mississippi State Department of Health will approve or deny a complete application or renewal within 10 days, and the card follows within 5 days.

How would I know that my application has been approved?

You will get an email from the MSDH portal, and you can view and print your electronic card there.

Caregivers

Does the Mississippi Medical Cannabis Program allow caregivers?

Yes. A designated caregiver needs to be

At least 21 years old, unless they are the parent or a legal guardian of a minor patient
Not been convicted of a disqualifying felony offense. MSDH requires a fingerprint background check to verify this.

A designated caregiver cannot assist more than 5 registered qualifying patients with their medical use of medical cannabis.

Are there dispensaries in Mississippi?

Yes. MSDH’s business search lists 188 dispensaries licensed by the Department of Revenue, as of October 8, 2026.

Where do I purchase medical marijuana once I have my MMJ card?

You can only buy cannabis products from a licensed Mississippi marijuana dispensary.

Can anyone purchase medical cannabis in the state?

No. Only cardholders, including visitors with a temporary Mississippi card, may buy and possess medical cannabis.

How much medical marijuana can I purchase at once?

The state of Mississippi calculates the possession and purchase limits for cannabis products using the “Mississippi Medical Cannabis Equivalency Units” (MMCEUs). One MMCEU is equal to:

3.5 grams of flower
1 gram of total THC in infused products
1 gram of total THC in a concentrate

The purchase limits for resident cardholders are:

No weekly cap since July 1, 2024
No more than 24 MMCEUs in 30 days

The possession limit is

No more than 28 MMCEUs

The purchase limits for nonresident cardholders are

No more than 6 MMCEUs in a week
No more than 12 MMCEUs in a 15 day period

The possession limit is

No more than 14 MMCEUs

There are no limits for non-consumable medical cannabis products like suppositories, ointments, soaps, and lotions.

Cannabis flower or trim cannot have a potency of greater than 30% total THC
Cannabis tinctures, oils, and concentrates cannot have a potency of greater than 60% total THC
