How Do You Get a Medical Cannabis Card in Salt Lake City, UT?

Your Salt Lake City Medical Marijuana Card needs an in-person visit unless a narrow exception applies, and the provider records the recommendation in the state’s Electronic Verification System. The rules behind it come from the Utah Medical Cannabis Act, summarized on our Utah marijuana laws page.
Salt Lake City marijuana doctors who recommend medical cannabis must hold a Utah license: a physician (MD or DO), APRN, physician assistant or, within podiatry, a podiatrist, with four hours of medical cannabis education.
Salt Lake City patients can buy at pharmacies in the city or from pharmacies that list home delivery in Salt Lake County. Patients and providers here follow Utah’s Medical Cannabis Act, whose patient and provider rules are in Utah Code Title 26B, Chapter 4, Part 2.
After a recommending provider certifies you, you pay the state card fee using the instructions the state emails you and download your card, which lasts up to one year. You can then buy at any licensed Utah medical cannabis pharmacy. If your first recommendation came at a face-to-face visit, that provider may renew a Salt Lake City medical marijuana card by phone or video; any other provider must see you in person.

Each Utah recommending provider may recommend cannabis to no more than 1.5% of the state’s cardholders, a limit of 1,759 recommendations as of October 2026, not counting patients billed through insurance.
Under Utah’s Medical Cannabis Act, qualifying conditions include HIV or AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, cancer, persistent nausea, Crohn’s disease, seizures, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and terminal illness. Once you are eligible and your application is complete, Utah law gives the state 15 days to issue your card.

Utah Medical Marijuana Card Program
The Utah Medical Cannabis Act (HB 3001) was signed into law on December 3, 2018. Salt Lake City applicants apply online in the state’s Electronic Verification System (EVS) after signing in with a UtahID. To get your Utah Cannabis Card, a Utah recommending provider must certify you after a medical assessment. Once your provider enters the recommendation, applicants 21 or older with a listed condition get an electronic conditional card from the state, valid up to 60 days, with the same rights as a full card.

A Salt Lake City patient pays two costs for a Utah Medical Marijuana Card: the provider’s visit fee, and the state card fee, which Utah’s Center for Medical Cannabis collects after the provider certifies you.
Utah Medical Marijuana Laws
A Utah Medical Marijuana Card lets you buy, possess and use medical cannabis in an approved dosage form, but not smoke it or use it in public view. Police can check the state’s system only to confirm that a card is valid.
