A Florida Medical
Marijuana Card
Who can certify you for a Florida medical marijuana card? Only a qualified physician, a status open only to MDs and DOs holding an active, unrestricted Florida license who have also passed the state-required 2-hour course and exam. Your first certification needs an in-person exam in the same room as the physician. The state ID card then costs $75, plus $2.75 when you pay online.

How Do You Get a Florida Medical Marijuana Card?
You get a Florida medical marijuana card in three steps: an in-person exam with a qualified physician, the physician’s certification in the Medical Marijuana Use Registry, and your ID card application to the Office of Medical Marijuana Use. The exam comes first: s. 381.986(4)(a)1 requires an in-person physical examination before an initial certification.
- Book an in-person exam. Choose a new patient visit at our Tampa, Fort Myers or Sarasota office, or see any other qualified physician on the OMMU qualified physician list.
- Your physician decides. The physician certifies you only after diagnosing at least one qualifying medical condition and determining that medical use would likely outweigh the potential health risks for you, and then enters the certification in the registry.
- Apply for the ID card. Once certified, you apply to the OMMU and pay the state fee, which the next section explains.
What Does a Florida Medical Marijuana Card Cost?
A Florida medical marijuana card has two costs: the physician’s evaluation fee and the state’s $75 per ID card application, plus a $2.75 convenience fee when you pay the state online. Our new patient evaluation fee depends on the office: $199 in Tampa, $99 in Fort Myers and $99 in Sarasota. The same $75 state fee applies to an initial or a renewal application, and the card expires one year after approval.
Why Must the First Visit Be in Person?
Florida law requires it: before issuing an initial certification, the qualified physician “must conduct an in-person physical examination of the patient,” with the physician “physically present in the same room as the patient” (s. 381.986(4)(a)1). A video or phone visit cannot be your first certification visit. After that exam, the same physician may conduct later renewal exams through telehealth, and a new physician, even in the same practice, must examine you in person first (OMMU physicians FAQ).

Once your ID card is approved, and while the card and your physician certification both stay current, Florida law lets you purchase, possess and use medical marijuana. Your Florida ID card is valid for one year after approval, and the $75 state fee applies again at each renewal.

The medical marijuana card is only available to permanent and seasonal Florida residents. Florida requires an in-person exam for a first certification, and only the physician who did that exam may renew it by telehealth.

With a current certification, this card lets you buy, possess and use medical cannabis under Florida law.
